Matt Allitt, one of our resident Kemp Town vets was chosen to feature in The Cat magazine, the official publication of Cats Protection. The first issue printed excerpts from an interview with Matt where he gave advice on how to become a vet, the best career path and necessary training.
This first article was so popular that the magazine decided to use Matt for a follow up feature. The feature was ‘A Day in the Life of a Vet’ and involved one of the magazine’s reporters, Amy Rutter following Matt through a busy day at the Kemp Town surgery.
Their day started early with a handover meeting where the emergency admissions to Vetcall, the out-of-hours service were reviewed. Next, Matt and Amy ran through the list of morning operations while even more animals were brought in for consultations. The morning’s operations included several on dogs, one to removal a fractured nail and others to correct a stomach condition and repair an eyelid. Then a cat had a cancerous toe removed and two guinea pigs were seen, one to remove a growth and another for investigative procedures on its skin. Matt finished off the morning’s surgery with a dental treatment on another dog.
There was no respite in the afternoon. It was full with consultations. From 3-6pm Matt patiently reviewed each new case, talking to owners, allaying fears and prescribing medications where needed. Their busy day ended with the day theatre cases being sent home and the next day’s theatre being planned. The feature was really well received by The Cat readers and gave a fascinating insight into a vet’s world and also the organisation behind a busy practice like Coastway.
